If you need more penetration with the same style bullet and you step up to a Glock 19 or larger, then the Critical Duty might be a good round. So for you Glock 27, the Critical Defense is a good round. Hornady claims to have solved that problem, and most tests I've seen seem to concur. Normally, rounds are designed to be fired from a 4"-ish barrel and will only expand reliably when they are travelling fast enough. This is least of my concerns and may be just marketing hype, but Hornady claims the Critical Defense rounds reach a good velocity in a short barrel. Other rounds, like Federal Bulldog, are specifically designed for drywall, but I found the overall performance lacking in more normal usage scenarios. In most tests, Critical Defense rounds are shown to be pretty reliable in being forced open by the filled tip when it hits drywall and not penetrate quite as far. Once that happens on the first wall, the bullet will continue to penetrate additional walls just as if it were a full metal jacket round. ![]() Some rounds hit drywall or thick jackets and the hollow point clogs on them. I have yet to see this issue with Hornady. I've cycled cheap bullets before and you can noticeably see the difference between a cycled round and fresh round. The bullet on the Critical Defense round is cannelured, which means it's crimped into the case in such a way that cycling the round and banging it into the feed ramp shouldn't push the bullet back into the case. I've seen Federal hollow points, which are really wide at the opening, hang up in my guns, even in 115 gr. The filled tip in the hollow point adds to the feeding reliability. ![]() The 115 gr Critical Defense is a bit shorter and feeds well. hollow point bullet is sometimes a little too long to feed reliably on the steep feed ramp of a Kahr CW9 or P11. Glocks shouldn't have a problem feeding longer bullets, but some guns (like my KelTec P-11) do.
